About HimalDB
Bringing the legendary Himalayan climbing records to life through interactive data visualization and analytics.
Everest, the crown jewel of the Himalayas
Our Mission
HimalDB is a modern visualization platform for the extensive records of the Himalayan Database, a compilation of records for all expeditions that have climbed in the Nepal Himalaya. Our mission is to transform this valuable historical data into accessible, interactive visualizations that help researchers, climbers, and enthusiasts understand trends, patterns, and statistics in Himalayan mountaineering.
The Himalayan Database Legacy
The Himalayan Database represents over half a century of meticulous record-keeping, becoming the definitive archive of Himalayan climbing history.
Elizabeth Hawley Begins
Elizabeth Hawley, an American journalist, begins documenting Himalayan expeditions, establishing herself as the unofficial custodian of climbing records in Nepal.
First Digital Compilation
Richard Salisbury collaborates with Elizabeth Hawley to create the first digital compilation of her vast records, laying the groundwork for the Himalayan Database.
Public Release
The Himalayan Database is released to the public, documenting over 9,000 expeditions to more than 300 peaks in the Nepal Himalaya.
Elizabeth Hawley's Legacy
Elizabeth Hawley passes away at 94, leaving behind an unparalleled legacy of Himalayan climbing documentation that continues to be maintained by her successors.
HimalDB Launch
HimalDB transforms the Himalayan Database with modern visualization tools, making this invaluable historical resource accessible to a broader audience.
Our Contribution
While the original Himalayan Database is a remarkable resource, it is distributed as a Microsoft Access database, which can be challenging for casual users to navigate. Our project builds upon this foundation with modern tools and visualizations.
Modern Web Interface
A responsive design that works beautifully across all devices, from desktop to mobile, making data accessible anywhere.
Interactive Visualizations
Dynamic charts and graphs that help users understand complex mountaineering trends and patterns at a glance.
Research Tools
Advanced filtering and search capabilities that enable both casual enthusiasts and serious researchers to find exactly what they need.
Route Comparison
Tools to compare different routes on the same peak, helping climbers make informed decisions based on historical data.
Climber Profiles
Detailed profiles of notable mountaineers, showcasing their achievements and contributions to Himalayan climbing history.
Historical Timelines
Interactive timelines that showcase the evolution of Himalayan climbing through the decades, highlighting key milestones.
Data and Privacy
HimalDB respects the intellectual property of the original Himalayan Database. Our platform is a visualization layer that references and credits the original data source. We do not claim ownership of the underlying data.
We encourage users to visit the official Himalayan Database website for licensing information and to access the complete records.
All visualizations and analysis tools on HimalDB are provided for educational and research purposes only. While we strive for accuracy, users should verify critical information with original sources when making climbing or research decisions.
Development and Roadmap
HimalDB is actively evolving with new features and improvements planned for future releases.
1Advanced Analytics
Machine learning algorithms to discover hidden patterns and correlations in expedition data, providing climbers with valuable insights.
2Geographic Integration
Interactive 3D maps that display routes, camps, and climbing statistics directly on topographic representations of the mountains.
3Expedition Planning Tools
Resources for climbers to plan expeditions based on historical weather patterns, success rates, and optimal climbing windows.
